Brussels is often overlooked as a tourist destination more often than not and it’s mainly because people consider it to be a boring destination. Well, there is more to Brussels than the European Parliament. It’s a vibrant city with great food and some of the finest chocolate and sweet treats in the world! So if you’re looking somewhere different in Europe to visit, Brussels is worth it!
It’s the political heart of Europe
Brussels is home to the European Union’s headquarters, and many politicians from across Europe visit now and again to make major political decisions. The city has several buildings dedicated to the EU. We might mock Brussels for its role as the centre of the EU but it is one of the main reasons why you must visit here!
The comics in Belgium are serious business, with hundreds of comic book authors and famous characters such as The Smurfs, Blake and Mortimer, and Tintin, it’s safe to say the country has a rich tradition when it comes comics! During your visit, the streets of Brussels will remind you of this fact over and over again, with comic-book characters looking out over 40 different frescoes.
Belgian Waffles and Belgian Frites
Of course, it’s cliché! But you cannot come to Brussels without taking a visit to at least one waffle or fries stall. Regardless of whether you have a sweet tooth or not, Belgian waffles are so good! Like the waffles, the famous Frites are almost as addictive. They’re fried twice in beef tallow and come with the best sauces!
Visit Grand Place, Brussels main square!
Visit Grand Place in Brussels, the square that has been voted many times round as one of the most beautiful squares in Europe. It is surrounded by exquisite buildings, lined with cafes and restaurants, and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Every two years, the square is decorated with an impressive flower carpet every two years in August. Every year a different theme is chosen, for example, in 2016 the theme was celebrating 150 years of friendship between Belgium and Japan!
See all of Europe’s attractions in one tiny theme park
If you want something a bit different on your visit to Brussels, why not visit the Mini-Europe theme park? The park can be found in the shadow of the Atomium and features reproductions of 80 cities and 350 buildings. Here you’ll find a mini Berlin Wall, Eiffel Tower, Doge’s Palace and Big Ben!
